My Weekend on Dunk Island

My day started by meeting Rebecca Nable from Voyages at the Qantas terminal at 8.45am. We were a small group of 4 consultants from Sydney that were flying up to Cairns to meet the other consultants from Melbourne and Brisbane that where joining us on our weekend to Dunk Island. In Cairns we all met at the baggage collection, collected our stuff and were shuffled on to a mini bus to head off to catch our next plane. We where all asked to check in at the Hinterland domestic airport and take a seat in the waiting room to wait for the departure of our flight. The pilot came out and gave us run down on emergency procedures and then he told us that we would be flying on a 12 seater Cessna Caravan. I can't remember the last time I flew on a small plane or ever remember flying in a caravan!! The flight took 35 minutes; the weather was perfect and my eyes where everywhere as the view was amazing. Dunk Island is quite a large island and as we circled before landing we had a fantastic aerial view of the island.

After we landed at 3.00pm a staff member from Dunk Island was there to greet us and welcome us with a nice tall cold glass of tropical juice. It was about 30 degrees the weather was perfect. We quickly checked in at the airport and where escorted to our rooms.

Last year, North Queensland was hit by cyclone "Larry". Parts of the island were destroyed and now most of the resort was like new.

We arrived at our rooms and were lucky enough to be in beach front rooms. Very nice and new large rooms with two double beds and a day bed. When you opened up the sliding door and looked out the view was what you expected on a tropical island, palm trees and a beautiful bay with the water like glass.

We were given time to freshen up and asked to meet in the bar restaurant and entertainment area which was a large covered open space with lounges and chairs that were scattered all over the place. It overlooked the butterfly pool that is featured in all the brochures. We missed lunch but we were asked to have seat out around the pool where we were provided with an assortments of dips, wedges and lots of finger food that also included their famous barramundi spring rolls. If this is how the rest of the food provided on the island was like, then we were off to a good start.

Just before sunset we were taken up to the 9th hole of the golf course to drink champagne and watch the sunset. The golf course was an 18-hole course before the cyclone but due to the damage they had to turn it into a 9-hole course. We were off again to get changed for dinner and head down to the restaurant for a seafood buffet. There are 3 restaurants on the island. The main restaurant is the Beachcomber Restaurant where breakfast is served. The Terrace is Italian cuisine and the Jetty Café is where you get the best seafood dishes. The whole weekend was focused on eating. The different foods were just amazing.

On the Saturday we where asked to head down to the pool for water aerobics. I was hesitant at first but the staff were very friendly and we had a great time. We had a lot of laughs and it was lots of fun. After our aerobics session we were able to have some time to ourselves. Rebecca and I, ( my room mate) spent time walking around the resort getting to know it and taking lots of photos. Discovering where everything was and what was available to guests. The cascade pool was tranquil with the Terrace Restaurant situated right next to it. Also close by was the kids club and the activities centre, basketball court, tennis court and kids play ground. The activities on the island are plenty; it’s very hard to decide what to do first. Just about everything you could think of and more Even a beautiful spa centre that you can do on your own or with your partner. Just a bit of advice, book before you go. It can get booked out weeks in advance.

The island is very green and lush; everything is blended into the landscape. You don't realise how big the resort is until you wander round and the first thing you think is “Wow there is a lot here!” In total there are 160 rooms that are very well spaced out so you don't have the feeling that everyone is on top of each other. There are 5 categories of rooms - the bayview suites, the beachfront rooms, the beachfront suites, garden cabanas and the Banfield rooms. The bayview, beachfront rooms & suites were all very nice. The garden cabanas and Banfield rooms are a lot older and have that stale smell, which does not appeal to me at all.

Overall Dunk Island was great, the staff were fantastic, very friendly and nothing seemed to be a bother, which made the stay so much more enjoyable. The food, well I couldn't eat for a week afterwards. I ate so much and I couldn't say no, I was so keen to try everything because it was so good.

I personally think that Dunk is a great family holiday I can't wait to take my family there. There is definitely something for everyone.
